Councillors are seeking to acquire the land in Lissywollen off the OPW for the use of a recreational facility.
The fate of a former IPAS centre in Westmeath is in the hands of OPW Minister and planners in Westmeath County Council.
That's according to Athlone Councillor Aengus O'Rourke, after local reps voted unanimously to acquire the eleven ares of land in Lissywollen from the OPW.
It follows after the High Court quashed plans for a 1000 person capacity centre last November,with hopes it can now be used as a public open recreation facility.
