Late 2040 is the earliest we can expect to see all wastewater plants brought to compliance.
Long-term investment is needed to speed up the delivery of midlands wastewater treatment plant upgrades.
That's among the findings of Uisce Éireann's Draft Water Services Strategic Plan 2050, which estimates it'll be late 2040 or early 2050 before it can bring all wastewater treatment plants into full compliance.
Among those schemes is the Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands region, which aims to improve water supply resilience in a number of counties, including Offaly and Westmeath.
Uisce Éireann is seeking public submissions on the Strategic Plan, which will serve the country up to 2050, with an eight-week consultation process underway.
