More than 3,500 people in the midlands were affected by boil water notices last year.

The details are contained in the Environmental Protection Agency's annual report.

Supply was disrupted for 1,400 people in the Ballany area of Westmeath twice in September and December, while just over 2,000 people were affected in the Clonbullogue and Dunkerrin areas of Offaly.

There was just one notice issued in Laois to six customers in Ballickmoyler, but that lasted for six months.

Only one boil water restriction was ordered in the region in 2019 by Irish Water.
