Nearly 800 babies were born in the midlands in the third quarter of last year.

New figures from the CSO show just under 300 of those were born in Westmeath, 260 were born in Laois and the figure is 220 in Offaly.

Nationally, the number of births fell by nearly 2% in that period, while the average age of mothers was 33.

Over 40% of babies were born outside of marriage.
