The HSE is to assess an area in a midlands town to develop a new ambulance base.
The Health Service is due to appoint a design team for the new facility before the end of September, with the group's first step to identify a site for the premises in Athlone.
The first area to be assessed will be the base on the HSE-owned site to the rear of the new Community Nursing Unit in Clonbrusk.
If that site proves to be unsuitable, other locations in Athlone and the surrounding will be looked at.
Longford Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD Robert Troy he appreciates the update from the Health Service:
"There has been a long-standing commitment from the HSE that it will relocate the existing base, but it's now long overdue.
This delay is not acceptable. I'm calling on the HSE to follow through on its commitment to develop a new base.
If they don't have any suitable sites within the ownership of the HSE, they need to swiftly seek expressions of interests from other parties. This is going on too long."
