Offaly Councillors Call for 10% Increase in GMA Budget

Councillors in the Tullamore MD are seeking a 10% increase in their general allocation for 2027.

Tullamore Municipal District councillors have called for a 10% increase in the General Municipal Allocation for 2027.

Local Councillors expressed concerns with the current funding proposal which remained the same as the allocation given to the Tullamore district in 2026.

The draft budget maintains Tullamore's allocation at €220,000.

However, councillors argued that an increase was needed to maintain support for local groups, organisations and community initiatives.

Cllr Frank Moran proposed the 10% increase to the €220,000 offered.

Cllr Feighery seconded the motion, with all councillor's present supporting the proposal.

This motion will now be reviewed.

The chamber discussed how GMA funding benefits the local community, with men's sheds and events such as the switching on of the Christmas lights among the initiatives mentioned.

Councillors stressed the importance of supporting men's sheds, recognising the vital work they do within local communities.

While Christmas lights and other community events attract visitors to Tullamore and the wider area.

Cllr Oliver Bryant described the allocation as an important resource saying, "It's the only discretionary budget we as councillors get to decide where the money actually goes."

He also highlighted potential uses for the funding, including local playgrounds and community committees, emphasising the need for financial support for groups making a positive difference locally.

Party and district colleague Oliver Bryant backed the motion, highlighting the importance of GMA funding for local organisations and communities.
