Brian Stack lost his life after being shot in 1983.

Micheal Martin will address the Dail this afternoon.

A State apology will be delivered to the family of a murdered Midlands prison officer this afternoon.

Brian Stack was the Chief Prison Officer in Portlaoise Prison when he was shot in the neck by the IRA in 1983 - no suspect has ever been formally identified.

This afternoon Taoiseach Micheál Martin will apologise on behalf of the State to his family - with a particular focus on the initial garda investigation.

Mr Stack's son Austin says an internal garda review of the initial investigation found almost 200 errors or omissions.
