Three people lost their lives on roads over the Bank Holiday weekend, bringing the number of road deaths this year to 72.

During the Garda roads policing operation, more than 140 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Gardaí also detected over 3,100 speeding offences, including one motorist in Walderstown in Westmeath doing 120 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone, another in Ballinasloe was clocked doing 90 in a 60 zone, a motorist travelling 108 in an 80 zone on the in Crettyyard in Laois and a driver in Edenderry was detected travelling at 76 kilometres an hour in a 50 zone.

More than 340 drivers were caught using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Road users are being urged to continue taking care as journeys return to normal following the long weekend.

The number of drug-driving detections on roads has been described as 'concerning'.
