The local authority launched a 10-year strategy for the area.
Developing a visitor centre, camp site and 'green gym' are among the plans set for a midlands amenity.
Offaly County Council has launched the 10-year Strategy for the Derryounce Lakes and Trails in Portarlington.
The local authority proposes developing an 'examplary' visitor centre, which would act as the focal point of Derryounce.
It also suggests it could be a good place to house a permanent exhibition on the history of the bogs, with a completion target set for 2032.
The 10-year plan discusses the possibility of expanding the lakes at 'Bog Beach,' to accommodate planned triathlons and long-distance swimming events.
Developing a Green Gym, which will target people from 2 to 92, is also a priority for Offaly County Council, which will see the provision of challenging balance trails or work-out stations along loop routes.
The local authority will also look at developing a new dog park in the area, as well as focusing on adding to the site's biodiversity.
