Dessie Dolan is prioritising panel development over results in the O'Byrne Cup.

Westmeath travelled to Longford for a midlands derby to open their 2024 campaign in the O'Byrne Cup.

It was Paddy Christie's side that won out by a brace of points at full time after the home side managed to pull away midway through the second half.

Dessie Dolan's side were inexperienced, with 27 getting some game time and very few of them having played league or championship for the maroon and white.

The final score was 0-9 to 0-7.
