The six-time world player of the year looks set to leave the Spanish giants.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta has revealed keeping Lionel Messi would have put the club at "risk for the next 50 years".
The shock departure of the Argentina forward from the Spanish giants was announced yesterday, because giving him a new contract would have broken La Liga's financial fair play rules.
Laporta has said "Barca will always be above players, managers and presidents" and he couldn't put the club's future in jeopardy.
The announcement is perhaps the result of Real Madrid’s rejection of CVC’s investment in La Liga. Both Barca and Real were due to benefit to the tune of around €250 million.
