Laois hurlers to receive civic honour following Joe McDonagh Cup success

Laois County Council is set to honour the county’s senior hurlers with a civic reception following a hugely successful year for the team and management.

The team secured a nine-point victory over Carlow to win the Joe McDonagh Cup earlier this year, bringing success in the form of silverware back to the O’Moore County.

The win in Croke Park is a significant achievement for the team, and Laois County Council will mark the occasion.

Councillor Barry Walsh says this is an important decision, as Laois has not had much sporting honours in recent times.

The highly successful year sees Laois return to the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship in 2027, following a five-year absence from the competition.

The civic reception will recognise the team’s success and its contribution to the county, which was hard-fought after losing two consecutive finals in 2024 and 2025.

The event also gives councillors an opportunity to acknowledge the role of the team in generating a sense of pride across Laois.

The civic reception is a decision being made by elected councillors, highlighting the council’s role in recognising achievements that matter to people across the county.
