Garrycastle also had to work hard but did just enough to see off 2022 finalists St Mary's on a scoreline of 1-09 to 0-10.
The Down's were 2-05 to 0-06 winners over St Loman's, while Killucan claimed an impressive 2-14 to 1-05 over Moate on Thursday evening.
The next round begins with Moate taking on Mullingar Shamrocks on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday, The Downs face Milltown, St Mary's are against St Loman's, and Killucan meet Garrycastle.
