Chad Wheeler has since tweeted an apology.
An American football player has had his contract terminated by the Seattle Seahawks following his arrest for alleged domestic violence at the weekend.
Chad Wheeler's tweeted an apology, saying he's ashamed and needs to get help to "never pose a threat to another".
He added it's important his girlfriend Alleah "gets the care she needs" and that he's walking away from the sport.
Events happened over the weekend that transpired from a manic episode. I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering that I have caused to Alleah and her family.
