Pat Roe's side fell to a 0-19 to 0-11 defeat in St Conleth's Park, in a game which the Laois champions trailed by 0-15 to 0-2 at the break.
Colm Murphy missed a first half penalty, while Niall Kelly impressed for the Kildare side as he finished with 0-10.
Despite a strong second half, Portarlington couldn't complete a dramatic comeback and were also reduced to 14 men after Patrick O'Sullivan's late red card.
