Kerryman to succeed Sugrue
Mike Quirke's expected to be confirmed as the new Laois football manager as soon as next week.
The four-time All Ireland winner is the preferred candidate of the Laois selection committee to replace fellow Kerryman John Sugrue.
Under Sugrue, Laois gained back-to-back promotions to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League, but again lost in round 4 of the football qualifiers.
Quirke could be the third Kerry manager appointed in Leinster with Jack O'Connor the new man in charge of Kildare and Paul Galvin at Wexford.
39 year old Quirke is also well known in Basketball circles and is a columnist with the Irish Examiner.
It is understood that a Laois GAA executive meeting will be held over the weekend to ratify the appointment.
