The Clara man slotted in a 7 foot eagle on the the par 5 16th to add to three birdies on 5,12 and 13.
However the 37 year old did finish his round with his second bogey of the day on the last.
Lowry is 2 shots off the lead on 3-under, whilst McIlroy is a shot further back.
The lead is held by American Wyndham Clark on 5-under
Lowry is back out for round 2 at 2:45.
