The O'Moore County hurlers began their Walsh Cup campaign with a 2-18 to 0-18 victory over Offaly in Portlaoise last night.
The goals came courtesy of Mark Dowling, and an Enda Rowland penalty.
Laois will be hoping to generate some early season momentum that was sorely lacking last year.
After their Walsh Cup campaign, where they face Galway next week, Maher's men head in to division two of the national league.
