Season starts early
The new season began a couple of weeks early on Saturday with the O'Byrne Cup, and Westmeath footballers got the defence of their title off to a good start when they beat Wexford by 1-11 to 0-11 in Enniscorthy.

There was an entertaining local derby in Portarlington with Offaly coming out on top against Laois.
The final score was Offaly 1-17 Laois 2-12.
