The league leaders ran out 3-1 winners in Westmeath on Friday night after Frantz Pierrot had given the midlanders the lead in the first half.
Galway equalised and pulled ahead through goals from David Hurley, who scored two, and Stephen Walsh.
That result leaves Athlone sitting fifth with three wins, three losses and a draw.
