Children's Unnecessary Hip Surgeries

Hundreds, if not thousands of children, may have undergone unnecessary hip surgery.

A draft report has revealed that hundreds, and possibly thousands of children, may have undergone unnecessary hip surgeries, between 2021 and 2023.

A clinical audit has raised concerns as to whether surgeries for hip dysplasia were required for the children involved.

The draft report into 561 hip surgeries on children since 2021 found 79% of the surgeries at Cappagh Hospital and 60% at Temple Street did not meet proper surgical criteria.

These unnecessary surgeries have resulted in untold stress and pain for the children involved and their families.  Families are entitled to raise questions in relation to informed consent – what information was imparted to families in advance about the necessity of the surgeries – and what are the long term health implications for children who underwent such surgeries.
