Midlands 103 is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Local Democracy Reporter to join our award-winning news team.
This is a one-year fixed-term position under the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme, funded by Coimisiún na Meán, offering an excellent opportunity to deliver meaningful public-interest journalism across counties Laois, Offaly and Westmeath.
The Role
Local government decisions have a direct impact on people's everyday lives. We are looking for a journalist who can get behind those decisions, explain why they matter and turn them into engaging stories for our audience.
You will:
• Report on local authority meetings, decisions and developments across Laois, Offaly and Westmeath
• Develop original stories on the issues affecting communities across the Midlands
• Hold decision-makers to account through accurate, fair and independent journalism
• Build strong contacts across local government and the communities we serve
• Produce compelling news content for radio, online and digital platforms
• Identify stories and emerging issues beyond the council chamber that are relevant to local democracy and public life
Who We're Looking For
You'll have a strong interest in news and current affairs, excellent communication skills and a genuine curiosity about the people and issues shaping the Midlands.
You should be comfortable developing your own stories, interviewing public representatives and other key figures, and translating sometimes complex decisions into clear and accessible journalism.
Previous newsroom experience and/or a relevant journalism qualification would be an advantage.
Above all, we're looking for someone with journalistic curiosity, sound judgement and a commitment to high-quality local journalism.
