A new report underlines many issues for septic tank owners nationwide.

9 in 10 Midlands septic tanks inspected last year failed environmental inspections, according to a new EPA report.

The agency says many faulty systems are putting drinking water wells and rivers at risk from contamination.

89 inspections were carried out in the region 2025, with issues including leaks, illegal discharges and poor maintenance identified.

Offaly has a 96% failure rate, it's 95% in Laois, and the figure is 85% in Westmeath.
