Abbeyleix Bog Project Inspiration To Others On Its 20th Anniversary

It's become a recreational and biodiversity hub.

The Abbeyleix Bog Project is an inspiration to others rewetting peatland to combat climate change.

That's according to its chairman Ricky Whelan, as they celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The 500 acre Laois site was previously earmarked for harvest by Bord na Móna, but Ricky says, as attitudes changed over the years, the decision was taken to restore it instead.

He says it's allowed by them to provide a recreational space for the community, while promoting biodiversity:
