Almost 150 Complaints Made Against Midlands Gardaí Last Year

That represents almost 1 in 10 of the total number across the country. 

146 complaints were made by members of the public against gardaí in the midlands in 2019. 

That represents almost 1 in 10 of the total number across the country. 

The number of complaints across both divisions were almost identical. 

75 people made allegations against members of the force in Laois/Offaly. 

While Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) opened investigations into 71 submissions against gardaí in Westmeath. 

In total, 1756 complaints were made across Ireland containing 2,885 separate allegations.  

The GSOC's annual report shows the majority of issues relate to neglect of duty, abuse of authority and allegations of non-fatal offeNces such as assault. 

96 sanctions were issued to gardaí across the country last year, with 32 instances where members of the force had their pay temporarily reduced.

The Commission also received 40 referrals where it appeared that the actions of a garda resulted in the death or serious harm of a person.
