Aontu's leader is demanding the Health Minister take accountability over serious overcrowding in a Midlands hospital.

Meath West TD Peadar Toibin says a memo has been sent to staff in Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore on reaching a "black escalation" status.

The term is the most severe declared by a hospital in the HSE system, meaning it's clinically unsafe.

Deputy Toibin feels it's a mix of bed capacity, staffing and consultant cover issues contributing to the situation.
