Armed Soliders To Be Phased Out Of Portlaoise Prison

They've been guarding parts of the prison since the 1970s.

Armed soldiers could soon be removed for Portlaoise Prison.

Members of the Defence Forces have guarded paramilitary prisoners at the maximum-security facility since the 1970s.

However, it's reported that, due to the falling number of such inmates, the presence of soldiers at the Laois prison will be phased out.

The Department of Defence has confirmed it will a joint review in response to the Commission on the Defence Forces' report.
