The Bioscience Research Institute at the Westmeath college is working on a novel process.
Athlone Institute of Technology is attempting to address a shortage of personal protective equipment in hospitals by decontaminating single-use items.
If successful, it would be possible to reprocess equipment such as gowns and facemasks and return them to facilities.
Director of the Bioscience Research Institute in AIT, Professor Neil J Rowan, says the make-up of the virus makes it quite sensitive and therefore, responsive to sterilisation.
He says process could be up and running very soon:
