Westmeath County Council has been facing calls to put bye-laws in place which would see begging prohibited.

Westmeath Councillor John Dolan has been calling for new bye-laws to be put in place, which would see begging prohibited.

The local authority says Gardaí only have means to intervene if begging becomes aggressive, intimidating or threatening.
