Retired surgeon at Portlaoise Hospital Peter Naughton is recalling the setting up of the Cuisle Centre in Portlaoise.
A retired surgeon is depicting the long battle to establish a cancer support service in Laois with his new book.
Peter Naughton specialised in cancer care at Portlaoise hospital, and his novel describes how his vision for patients at the Hospital met years of health service red tape and funding refusals.
Despite this, public support and community fundraising gathered €30,000 in donations in 2003.
This campaign led to the opening of the Cuisle Centre, Ireland’s first purpose-built cancer support centre, which opened in 2007.
Dr Naughton says the generosity of the communities in Laois helped deliver a service that now supports hundreds of patients each year:
