250 new prison places are set to be added.
The green light is being given by the Cabinet for the expansion of the Garda Station and Midlands Prison in Laois.
Financial support has been allocated to complete the extension and redevelopment of the Garda Síochána Divisional Headquarters in Portlaoise.
Midlands Prison is set to add 250 new prison places, with 180 to be accommodated in a newly constructed additional wing, while 70 will be created on the circular landings.
The tendering process for this project is scheduled to begin in 2026.
