Call To Protect Endangered Bird From Dogs At Westmeath Lake

Wader birds at Lough Ree in Athlone are being disturbed by dogs.

An endangered bird species at a Westmeath lake is being disturbed by people walking their dogs.  

The nesting sites of Waders at Lough Ree in Athlone and the Shannon Callows are at risk of being destroyed by human activity and dogs, causing the birds to abandon their nests with eggs. 

Despite conservation efforts, like the ACRES scheme and the Breeding Waders EIP project, the birds are the most endangered species in Ireland. 

Conservationists are urging people to keep their dogs on a leash in areas of wetlands and bogs.
