Chippers Urged To Use Irish Potatoes

Currently 72,000 tonnes of spuds are being imported from the UK to meet demand.

Former potato farmer and Offaly's Shane Howell says he tried to supply fast food outlets but instead they opted to import English potatoes, as they believed they were better due to the drier climate. 

He runs Howell and Matthews Fruit and Veg Shop in Tullamore and says there's no reason why farmers here can't be supplying spuds for chips:
