Calls For Lifeguard To Be Reinstated At Popular Midlands Swimming Pool

There are concerns a tragedy is waiting to happen at the popular spot.

There are calls for a lifeguard to be reinstated at Banagher Swimming Pool.

Local Social Democrat councillor Clare Claffey is appealing for the popular amenity to be supervised during the months of July and August.

A lifeguard service was previously jointly funded by Offaly and Galway County Councils, but the contract hasn't been renewed for almost 10 years, according to Water Safety Ireland instructor for Offaly, Kate O'Neill.

She thinks it's an accident waiting to happen:
