New data shows they've fallen by 27 percent, with large drops also for pharmacy, agriculture and physiotherapy courses.
Meanwhile, applications for construction courses are up 12 percent, with arts and humanities also up by between 9 and 11 percent.
Guidance counsellor at Coláiste Mhuire in Mullingar, Betty McLaughlin says while the news about nursing and midwifery is unfortunate, it does offer positives for students who have applied to these courses:
