An Offaly councillor is demanding financial aid be provided to people no longer permitted to cut turf.

It comes after hundreds of people were issued a letter from Bord na Móna, stating that the company can no longer grant licences for private peat extraction.

Fine Gael councillor Noel Cribbin has written to the government, asking for financial assistance so those affected can find alternative means of heating their homes.

He says a major decision like this must be implemented on phased basis:
