Calls are being made for link roads to be incorporated into development plans for Westmeath.

It's one of a number of measures suggested by Athlone councillors to address recurring traffic congestion issues in the town.

The Athlone Joint Urban Area Plan, which was originally due to be shown to the local authority last year, is now expected by 2025.

Independent Ireland Councillor, Paul Hogan, says the measure could also open up landbanks for housing and other services:
