The former Kilkenny hurler was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday.

A midlands author is describing the DJ Carey's situation as 'difficult' for those who idolise him.

The former Kilkenny hurler was jailed for five and a half years for defrauding 22 people out of a total of almost €400,000 by pretending he needed treatment for cancer on Monday.

Just over €44,000 has been repaid so far. 

Carlow's Eimear Ní Bhraonáin is the author behind 'The Dodger: DJ Carey and the Great Betrayal', which was released last Friday. 

She says he targeted vulnerable people who looked up to him:
