Driver Convicted Over Fatal Kildare Hit-And-Run Faces Sentencing

Judge Duffy ordered that Marin Silaghi remain in custody until his sentencing hearing tomorrow.

The mother of a teenager killed in a hit-and-run collision in Kildare two years ago is describing the "dark desolation" felt by her family at the way her son was treated when he was "at his most vulnerable."

41 year old Marin Silaghi, a Romanian national with an address in Ballybrittas, in Laois was convicted of four offences related to a hit-and-run incident following a jury trial at Naas Circuit Criminal Court last month.

16 year old Kedagh Moore was fatally injured as a result of the collision 250 metres from his home at Graigues, Robertstown, in Kildare while he was walking on the Allenwood-Prosperous road at around 12.40am on November 10, 2024.

The jury of six women and six men found Silaghi guilty of failing to stop and keep his vehicle as well as failing to offer assistance at the scene of the crash with the intention of evading criminal or civil liability.

They also found the accused guilty of driving a vehicle which he knew or ought to have known was dangerously defective.

The trial heard that Silaghi told gardai that damage to his van had been caused by a deer after he was stopped at a checkpoint on his way home from Navan a few hours after the collision.

The accused, who has no previous convictions, does not accept the verdicts of the jury.

Kedagh’s mother, Glenda Moore, told the court of the "utter devastation" her family experienced at the "extreme cruelty of driving away leaving our child face-down on the road to die alone."

Detective Garda Christine Brady told the court that after his arrest, Silaghi had described the incident as "unfortunate" before adding: It was his mistake. He didn’t turn around.

Judge Duffy remanded Silaghi in custody with a sentencing hearing due tomorrow.
