A Laois parish priest is hitting back at an Independent TD's controversial remarks about asylum-seekers. 

Last week Noel Grealish described them as 'economic migrants' who only come to Ireland to 'sponge off the system'. 

There's strong opposition in his constituency over possible plans to open a direct-provision centre in Oughterard, Co Galway. 

Fr Paddy Byrne is the parish priest in Abbeyleix, where there's a similar facility.
