The European Commission has adopted proposals to encourage young people to take up farming or to stay in the profession.
The proposed move will see the share of CAP funding doubling for young farmers from 3% to 6%.
EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen says the number of young people taking up farming is declining, as the average age of Irish farmers stands at 58 years, while only four per cent of farmers are under the age of 35.
