Fears Over Fair Deal Assesment If Elderly Rent Out Their Homes

One independent TD says whole streets could be left derelict as a result.

There's a warning that whole streets could be left derelict across the country because of a situation affecting the Fair Deal scheme. 

It's emerged the elderly are being discouraged from renting out their family home - because they're afraid it will affect their means test for a nursing home. 

Independent Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten says it's an understandable concern, because they're being hit three times in the assessment - for the value of their home, the rent it could raise, and any money deposited in their account:
