45 year old MMA fighter Charlie Ward was awarded $50,000.
The Irish Independent is reporting a Laois man has been awarded $50,000 when he lost a US fight purse after a Garda pursuit car crashed into his car five years ago.
45 year old MMA fighter Charlie Ward from Acragar, Mountmellick was allegedly hit by a patrol car running a red light on the Long Mile Road in Dublin in 2021.
Renowned MMA trainer John Kavanagh told the court Mr Ward could have progressed from fight purses worth $50,000 to $500,000 but for the injuries suffered in the crash.
He said he couldn't train or perform to the level he used to following the accident.
The Laois man won one fight and lost three after the incident, before deciding to retire.
In delivering her decision, Judge Sinead Ní Chulacháin said she was taking into consideration a reduction in damages after Mr Ward admitted travelling in a bus lane before the accident.
She awarded for former fighter $50,000 for the US fight purse he lost, and added an extra €12,000 for neck and head injuries.
On April 9, 2016, Mr Ward defeated Portuguese MMA fighter Joao Carvalho on a technical knockout, in a contest in Dublin.
Carvalho died in Beaumont Hospital two days later following emergency brain surgery.
