The local authority is hoping it will entice people to shop locally.

Shoppers in Athlone will be able to park for free in the run up to Christmas.

The initiative will run in parking facilities operated by Westmeath County Council from today until Christmas Eve.

It's hoped it'll entice people to shop in the town and boost local businesses after a terrible trading year.

Mayor of Athlone, Fianna Fáil councillor Aengus O'Rourke says it's an important step they can take to help retain jobs in the sector:
