The project for roof repairs was awarded €3.2 million in funding.
The latest step in renovating a Midlands castle is getting underway.
Essential roof repair to the fortified tower at Athlone Castle will see the replacement of the roof area, with OPW carpenters aworking with external contractors to remove and replace damaged fittings and gutter linings.
Once the roof repairs are complete, Westmeath County Council will begin significant enhancement works at Athlone Castle visitor centre.
It comes after the project was awarded €3.2 million through Fáilte Ireland’s ‘Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme’.
The Visitor's Centre has been closed to the public since October last year to facilitate the renovations.
