10 new properties are available to rent in Athlone and Portlaoise.

Local authorities in the Midlands should be given grants to build more housing on public land.

That's the view of Executive Director of the Simon Communities Ber Grogan.

Athlone and Portlaoise were two of the areas surveyed for properties available to rent on daft.ie for their latest Locked Out Of the Market report.

While 10 new properties are available to rent overall in both towns, none fall under the standard or discretionary rates of the HAP scheme.

Ms Grogan says it's driving more people into their services:
