Gardaí Awaiting Directions From DPP In Case Of “Slice Babies” Video

Beniamin Petre appeared at Portlaoise District Court.

Gardaí are still awaiting directions from the director of public prosecutions on how to proceed in a case against a man, who, on social media, threatened to ‘slice Irish babies.’

Beniamin Petre of no fixed abode appeared at Portlaoise District Court last week by video link from prison, where he has been held on remand since last month. Judge Andrew Cody asked court presenter Garda Sgt JJ Kirby what were the directions the director of public prosecutions, to which he replied: “I’m looking for four weeks, but there is no guarantee I will have the directions.”

Judge Cody asked Mr Petre would he consent to being remanded in custody for four weeks, to which he replied he would. Judge Cody went on to remand Mr Petre in custody by consent to appear at Portlaoise District Court by video link on 17 July.

The 50-year old, who has previously said that he is representing himself in the case, is charged with publishing a grossly offensive communication on TikTok with the intent to cause harm, contrary to Section 4(1) and (3) of the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020 on 24 May at an unknown location in Dublin.

He is further charged that on the same date at an unknown location in Dublin he used or engaged in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace contrary to Section 6A of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994, as inserted by Section 6(c) of the Criminal Justice (Hate Offences) Act 2024.
