Gardaí in Laois and Offaly are warning of a van travelling through the counties claiming to be from local authorities.
They're offering spare tarmacadam to people - a practice gardaí are emphasising no county councils engage in such activity or hire contractors to do so.
Gardaí are advising people to say no and walk away and to contact their local station if the group persist.
They're also asking people to warn elderly neighbours and those living alone in their area of the scam.
