Hundreds of people have turned out for the funeral of Joey Carthy in Co Kildare.
The 15-year-old was one of five teenagers who died in a crash on the M9 motorway in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Joey Carthy’s gold coffin was brought to St Michael’s Church in a white horse-drawn carriage, followed by hundreds of mourners — many wearing white T-shirts bearing the words “RIP Joey”.
There was a large Garda presence in Athy, with checkpoints set up on approaches to the town.
At the church, a blue-and-gold memorial display was surrounded by large white floral arrangements and framed photographs of the 15-year-old.
Carthy was one of five teenagers who died after their car was driven the wrong way along the M9 and collided head-on with another vehicle.
Three sisters and a seven-year-old boy in the other car remain in hospital with serious injuries.
Another of the teenagers who died, 16-year-old Alex McCarthy, will be laid to rest this afternoon.
