Illegal Quarrying In The Midlands Costing The Taxpayer "A Fortune"

Councillor Aisling Moran says greater enforcement is needed.

A Laois councillor is calling on the public to contact her if they are aware of illegal quarrying. 

Aisling Moran says illegal quarries are ruining the environment, damage tourism and can potentially produce substandard building materials.  

There are 156 registered quarries in the county, the vast majority of which are not in operation, while the local authority has enforcement files open against 12. 

The Fine Gael rep says illegal operators should be fined heavily and forced to restore their sites:
